Maintain a Month’s Supply of Fresh Parsley with the Bowl Method

Parsley in bowl

The aromatic allure of fresh parsley is indescribable, earning its reputation as the king of flavorings. Rich in properties and body-benefiting qualities, this ingredient elevates dishes and tantalizes taste buds. But how do you ensure its freshness for an entire month? Chefs share their insider trick.

Preserving Freshness: Quick and Easy Methods

Before delving into the bowl method, consider other quick and easy techniques.

One method involves placing the herb inside a damp, unprinted napkin, wrapping it, and storing the bundle in an airtight bag in the refrigerator. This preserves the leaves, keeping them intact and preventing them from drying out.

Another option is freezing. After thorough washing and drying, chop the parsley finely or use a chopper for convenience.

  1. Ice Tray Preservation:
    • Fill ice cubes with chopped parsley.
    • Add a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil to each cube.
    • Freeze and retrieve a cube whenever needed.
  2. Bowl Method for Long-Term Freshness:
    • Wash and dry the parsley thoroughly.
    • Finely chop it inside a bowl until full.
    • Transfer the chopped parsley into a glass jar with an airtight seal.
    • Store the jar in a cool, dry place (not in the fridge) for up to a month.

Alternatively, for a different approach, trim the stems’ lower part to approximately 12mm to facilitate water absorption. Ensure the leaves are dry. Submerge the stems in a glass bowl filled 3/4 with water. Refrigerate by wrapping a plastic bag around the bowl and securing it with an elastic band. This method is effective in retaining the leaves’ moisture, preventing them from drying out.
